How to Calculate Supplement Cost Per Serving

The two formulas SuppScout uses, with worked examples for creatine, magnesium and omega-3.

The short answer

Price ÷ servings = price per serving. Then, to compare products fairly, price per serving ÷ amount per serving × standard amount = cost per standardized amount — for example cost per 5 g creatine. SuppScout shows both numbers and the formula on every product.

Key takeaways
  • Price per serving = price ÷ servings per container.
  • Cost per standard amount normalizes different serving sizes.
  • Use the Supplement Facts amount, not the front-of-bottle number.

The two formulas

Price per serving = price ÷ servings per container

Cost per standardized amount = (price per serving ÷ amount per serving) × standard amount

Worked example: creatine

A $29.99 tub with 60 servings of 5 g creatine:

  • Price per serving: $29.99 ÷ 60 = $0.50
  • Cost per 5 g: ($0.50 ÷ 5 g) × 5 g = $0.50

A $29.99 bottle of gummies with 30 servings of 3 g:

  • Price per serving: $29.99 ÷ 30 = $1.00
  • Cost per 5 g: ($1.00 ÷ 3 g) × 5 g = $1.67

Worked example: magnesium

A $24.99 bottle, 60 servings, 200 mg elemental magnesium per serving:

  • Price per serving: $24.99 ÷ 60 = $0.42
  • Cost per 100 mg: ($0.42 ÷ 200 mg) × 100 mg = $0.21

Worked example: omega-3

Use EPA + DHA, not total fish oil. A $22.99 bottle, 60 servings, 360 mg EPA + 240 mg DHA per serving (600 mg total):

  • Price per serving: $0.38
  • Cost per 1,000 mg EPA + DHA: ($0.38 ÷ 600) × 1,000 = $0.64

Standard amounts SuppScout uses

  • Magnesium: per 100 mg elemental magnesium
  • Creatine: per 5 g creatine (as labeled)
  • Omega-3: per 1,000 mg EPA + DHA
  • Vitamin D: per 1,000 IU (25 mcg)
