What Does USP Verified Mean?

What USP’s verification program checks, what it doesn’t, and how to confirm a product.

The short answer

The USP Verified mark means a product participates in the U.S. Pharmacopeia’s Dietary Supplement Verification Program, which checks that it contains the listed ingredients in the declared amounts, doesn’t contain specified harmful levels of contaminants, breaks down properly, and is made under good manufacturing practices. It does not mean the supplement is effective or right for you.

Key takeaways
  • USP is an independent, nonprofit standards organization.
  • Verification covers identity, potency, contaminants, dissolution and manufacturing practices.
  • Confirm participation on USP’s website — not just the bottle.

What the program checks

According to USP, verified products are tested to confirm they contain the ingredients listed on the label in the declared potency and amounts, do not contain harmful levels of specified contaminants, will break down and release into the body within a specified amount of time, and have been made according to FDA and USP good manufacturing practices.

What it doesn’t mean

USP verification is about quality, not efficacy. It doesn’t evaluate whether an ingredient works for a particular purpose or whether the amount is appropriate for you.

How to confirm it

USP maintains a public list of verified products. SuppScout only marks a USP certification as verified after checking that list, and records the date.
